Using LiveUSB!
Mai 21st, 2008After failing to build my own Live USB image myself some weeks ago, now I have tried one of the LiveUSE images from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/FactoryLiveCDs. And I must say: Good Work. I had only minor problems with using it and in future I will use my USB stick to demonstrate the openSUSE distribution to others instead of a Live CD.
Here are some hints for everyone who want’s to use one of the LiveUSB images:
- I have to use “acip=off” as a kernel option to start the system from the stick. This is a bug and will go away with future version of the images.
- I have used a 2GB USB Stick, but the ext2 partition one the stick doesn’t fill it’s partition. It has only a 0.3GB file system contained in a 1.3GB partition. It can be resized using resize2fs after pluging the stick into a regular linux machine and unmounting the ext2 partition. This should be done automatically on first boot. But for now you have to do this manually.
- One advantage over a LiveCD is that you are able to install additional packages. There are some preconfigured repositories. Everything you have to do, is to activate some of them. You even may add other repositories like Packman. So first I have installed bash-completion and some other packages that are useful for me. Next I will try the mythTV frontend…
- The second advantage is, that your configuration changes are permanent. So I switched the default language to german, setup openvpn to connect to my home server and configured my instant messaging account.
Thanks for this great work. With this stick I am able to run my system on most foreign machines.
